Media Advisory: Special report on alarming achievement gap in schools to be released

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Officials with Indiana University Bloomington's Center for Evaluation and Education Policy will hold a news conference on Monday (Sept. 19) at 10 a.m. to discuss the substantial achievement gaps that exist among Indiana K-12 school students. The news conference will be in Room 134 of the University Place Conference Center at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.

CEEP Associate Director Terry Spradlin will release the center's special report, "Is the Achievement Gap in Indiana Narrowing?" during the news conference. CEEP Director Jonathan Plucker also will be on hand to answer questions.

Educators can point to a variety of positive academic trends when looking at Hoosier students in general, but when one looks below the surface at the performance of students identified by race/ethnicity, income, English proficiency or special education needs, an alarming picture emerges. For some students, the achievement gap gets larger the longer they are in school. CEEP's special report offers suggestions for a variety of stakeholders, including Indiana's Education Roundtable, state leaders and local educators, for addressing the achievement gap.

The report and a news release will be available at the news conference. The University Place Conference Center is located at 850 W. Michigan St. A parking garage is located beneath the center. For directions, visit https://www.universityplace.iupui.edu/directions/map.asp.
