New Indiana University trustees appointed by Gov. Mike Pence

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 20, 2013

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Two internationally renowned business leaders and public servants will join one of the university's most accomplished students as new members of the Indiana University Board of Trustees under appointments announced today by Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.

The new appointees are:

Randall Tobias

Randall Tobias, former CEO at Eli Lilly and Co., former administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development and the country's first Global AIDS coordinator. Tobias also is a member of the board at the IU Foundation and served as a trustee at Duke University for 13 years and chair of the board for three years. Tobias, a 1964 graduate of IU Bloomington with a bachelor's degree in marketing, is a member of the IU Foundation's President's Circle and in 2004 established the Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence at the IU Kelley School of Business.

James T. Morris, president of Pacers Sports and Entertainment and former executive director of the United Nations World Food Programme, as well as former CEO of Indianapolis Water Co. Morris, who graduated from IU Bloomington with a bachelor's degree in government in 1965, previously served as an IU trustee from 1996 to 2002 and as board president from 2000 to 2002. He currently is a member of the IU Foundation Board.

Janice Farlow, currently an M.D.-Ph.D. candidate at the IU School of Medicine and a former Wells Scholar at IU Bloomington. Farlow, a graduate of Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, earned bachelor's degrees, with honors, in biology and romance languages at IU Bloomington. She currently is studying medical and molecular genetics and is a member of the Medical Student Council at the School of Medicine. She has also served on IU's Board of Aeons, a 12-member student board that conducts research projects for the president's office.

In addition, Pence appointed Derica Rice, chief financial officer for Eli Lilly and Co., to a second term. Tobias, Morris and Rice were appointed to three-year terms, while Farlow was appointed to the customary two-year term as student trustee. The appointments are effective July 1.

Tobias and Morris will succeed Bruce Cole and Bill Strong, both of whom are completing their first term as trustees. Farlow will succeed Cora Griffin, who is completing her term as student trustee.

"I want to be the first to welcome our new trustees and also to offer my deepest gratitude to Bruce Cole, Bill Strong and Cora Griffin for their outstanding service to the university," IU President Michael A. McRobbie said. "I also am most appreciative to Governor Pence for securing these outstanding additions to our board. Randy Tobias and Jim Morris are Indiana icons whose distinguished careers in business and public service, as well as their demonstrated commitment to IU and higher education, make them ideally suited to help lead IU into the future.

"I also am delighted for the opportunity to work with Janice Farlow, whose appointment continues IU's practice of tapping our most impressive students to represent the interests of their fellow students at the trustee level. Finally, I am extremely pleased that Derica Rice, who has provided wise counsel over the past three years, has been re-appointed to a second term on the board. "

McRobbie also publicly thanked Cole, renowned Renaissance art scholar and distinguished professor emeritus at IU Bloomington; Strong, co-CEO of Asia Pacific for Morgan Stanley; and Griffin, who is pursuing a master's degree at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and a law degree at the IU McKinney School of Law, both in Indianapolis; for their service as trustees.

"IU is fortunate to have a thoughtful and supportive Board of Trustees that offers myriad perspectives and provides invaluable direction to me and other members of senior leadership, and Bruce, Bill and Cora all have made significant contributions to the board and the university as trustees," McRobbie said. "The entire university community owes them a debt of gratitude for their work on behalf of IU."

IU has a nine-member board, with six members appointed by the state's governor. IU alumni select the other three members, with one alumni board seat coming open each year. Voting in the current trustee election ends at 11 a.m. June 29. Any IU alumnus is eligible to vote and can do so online.
