Aug. 16, 2013

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Fall classes will begin over the next 10 days for more than 100,000 students enrolled at Indiana University campuses across the state.

The fall 2013 semester begins Monday, Aug. 19, for students at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and IU Kokomo. Classes start Monday, Aug. 26, at other campuses: IU Bloomington, IU East, IU Northwest, IU South Bend, IU Southeast and Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

Outside Students

Most first-year students at IU Bloomington will move into residence halls Wednesday; then they will immerse themselves in a packed schedule of Welcome Week activities designed by the Office of First-Year Experiences to connect students with each other and familiarize them with campus.

A complete schedule of Welcome Week activities is online. Interspersed with residence hall meetings, receptions and other activities, highlights include:

  • Freshman induction ceremonies for first-year students and their families, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Wednesday at the IU Auditorium, presided over by Provost and Executive Vice President Lauren Robel.
  • Culturefest, starting at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the IU Auditorium, featuring food, music, dance and other activities, followed by an after-party sponsored by the IU Art Museum.
  • Traditions and Spirit of IU, 4:15 p.m. Friday at Assembly Hall, an introduction to campus traditions, athletics and other activities.
  • Midnight Madness, 10 p.m. Friday-2 a.m. Saturday; buses will shuttle students from residence to local discount stores, which will offer bargains on furnishings and items for dorm rooms.

The IU Bloomington Health Center's Counseling and Psychological Services and Sexual Assault Crisis Service will present its annual "Sex, Drugs and Rock 'n Roll" from noon-3 p.m. Friday at Showalter Fountain. Featuring free food, games, prizes and activities, the event aims to get students off to a smart start for making positive health choices.

At IUPUI, the campus will celebrate the launch on Tuesday, Aug. 20, of University Tower, its newest residence hall, which includes more than 560 beds for freshmen and a state-of-the-art dining hall. The hall is part of a renovated hotel and conference building that also includes Hine Hall, an academic facility named for the first IUPUI chancellor.

Students at other campuses will also arrive to new or refurbished facilities, including the new Rose Residence Hall at IU Bloomington, a renovated RedHawk Café at IU Northwest and a renovated campus Art Gallery featuring a faculty exhibition at IU South Bend.

New leaders start their first full academic year at four IU regional campuses: Chancellor Terry Allison at IU South Bend, Chancellor Kathryn Kruz-Uribe at IU East, interim Chancellor Barbara Bichelmeyer at IU Southeast and interim Chancellor Susan Sciame-Giesecke at IU Kokomo.
