Chemist Richard DiMarchi honored for pharmaceutical research

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists selected Indiana University Bloomington biochemist Richard DiMarchi for its 2005 Research Achievement Award in Biotechnology. DiMarchi received the award on Sunday (Nov. 6) at the start of the professional society's annual meeting in Nashville, Tenn.

DiMarchi, the Jack and Linda Gill Distinguished Chair in Biomolecular Science, was honored for his contributions to the discovery and development of a number of protein-based drugs. He is responsible for the molecular design of Humalog, the first biosynthetic protein analog approved for human use.

DiMarchi joined the IUB chemistry faculty in fall 2003. Previously, he served as vice president of biotechnology research at Lilly Research Laboratories, where he was employed for more than 20 years.

DiMarchi is a co-founder of La Jolla, Calif.-based Ambrx Pharmaceuticals and currently serves as its external chairman of the board. He is a member of a number of biotechnology scientific advisory boards and is a member of the board of directors for Isis Pharmaceuticals. His research is currently focused on the chemical optimization of peptide-based drugs in the therapeutic area of endocrinology.
