Life sciences certificate program wins award

Indiana University Bloomington Division of Continuing Studies wins honors four consecutive years

BLOOMINGTON, Ind . -- An Indiana University Bloomington Continuing Studies' certificate program, Managing in the Life Sciences Industry, has been granted the 2006 Program of the Year award by the Indiana Council for Continuing Education, the statewide organization for continuing education professionals.

The noncredit program was introduced during the fall 2005 semester with 24 participants completing the first course offered -- Overview to the Life Sciences Industry. Each course in the program focuses on a specific aspect of managing in the life sciences industry. The core courses offered this spring include: Teamwork and Communication in the Life Sciences Industry, Managing Projects in the Life Sciences Industry, Regulatory Affairs in the Life Sciences Industry and Organizational Development in the Life Sciences Industry.

"We're very proud of this program," says Jim Shea, program director, professional development. "We worked with local life science firms and the Bloomington Life Sciences Partnership to determine their needs, and the result is this award-winning certificate program. It's an honor to be recognized in this way."

The award will be presented at the annual ICCE conference in Indianapolis in early March. This is the fourth consecutive year that Indiana University Bloomington Continuing Studies has won statewide recognition for its programs, instructors and adult students. Previous IU Bloomington award recipients have included Albert Wertheim, Diana Hoffman and Gene Brewer, for ICCE Instructors of the Year; Sheya Martin, the 2005 Adult Student of the Year; and the Medical Coding certificate program for Program of the Year in 2003.

IU Bloomington Continuing Studies provides opportunities for adults to engage in lifelong learning. Its programs include undergraduate degrees in general studies, diverse noncredit courses in Lifelong Learning and Professional Development, Mini University and Leadership Bloomington-Monroe County. IU Bloomington Continuing Studies also houses the Returning Students Center, which offers support for adults beginning or continuing college. All programs draw upon the rich resources of IU Bloomington, and are offered on campus and at convenient community locations in Bloomington and the surrounding area.
