Media Advisory -- Announcement Monday about initiative to help state’s schools

WHO: Michael A. McRobbie, interim provost at IU Bloomington and vice president for academic affairs; Gerardo M. Gonzalez, university dean of the IU School of Education; and Don Stinson, superintendent of the Metropolitan School District of Decatur Township.

WHAT: Indiana University will announce details of a major new initiative to help the state's public schools achieve their academic objectives. Beginning this fall, the initiative will involve selected public schools in Indianapolis, Gary and South Bend. Later, the program will be expanded to other Indiana schools as well.

WHEN: Monday, July 31, at 11:30 a.m.

WHERE: Decatur Middle School, 5108 South High School Road. Decatur Middle School is located on the southwest side of Indianapolis. Take the Kentucky Avenue exit off of I-465 and turn south (left) onto Kentucky Avenue. Turn left at the first stop light, which is High School Road. After about a block and a half on High School Road, the school will be on the right (south) side, behind an older school building. Parking is in front of the building as well as around the far side.

WHY THIS IS OF INTEREST: IU has increased its research into effective techniques for raising student achievement levels and wants to make sure this knowledge is readily available to every classroom teacher in Indiana. All Hoosier parents will be interested in knowing what IU is doing in their children's schools.

VISUALS: Immediately after the announcement, teachers and students from the the Indianapolis Challenger Learning Center will be available for interviews at the middle school and at the center, which is located at 5125 Decatur Boulevard. Before the announcement, teachers and students will be available in a classroom setting. Also, a number of business and community leaders who have advocated best practices in classrooms are expected to be present and will be available for reaction. Arrangements have been made to accommodate electronic media covering the announcement.
