International symposium on natural resource management planned at IU

The issues involved and choices that need to be made in preserving our natural resources are the theme for the Ninth International Symposium on Society & Resource Management that will be hosted June 2-5 by Indiana University.

"Choices and Consequences: Natural Resources and Societal Decision-Making" is the title for the event that is expected to attract some 500 attendees to the Willkie Residence Center.

Symposium co-chair Alan Ewert, a professor in the IU Department of Recreation and Park Administration, said those attending will include government officials, academics, educators, U.S. Forest Service representatives and natural resource management students.

The three keynote speakers will be Elinor Ostrom, the Arthur F. Bentley Professor of Political Science and co-director of the Center for the Study of Institutions, Population and Environmental Change at IU; Winifred Kessler, director of wildlife, fisheries, ecology and watershed for the Alaska Region of the U.S. Forest Service; and Robert Lewis Jr., deputy chief for research in the Washington, D.C., office of the Forest Service.

"A major premise of our symposium is that complex natural resource issues are society problems and thus must be addressed through an interdisciplinary, social science perspective," Ewert said.
