Traffic at Jordan and Tenth to be constricted

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Traffic on Jordan Avenue at Tenth Street will be constricted at times Thursday and Friday (Dec. 21 and 22) because of a large construction crane that will be set up in front of Wells Library.
The 220-foot crane will be used by engineers inspecting the building's limestone facing to ensure that all stones are securely fastened.
University Architect Robert Meadows said the crane setup work would begin about 8 a.m. Thursday, and it will remain in place until Friday evening. North-south traffic on Jordan at times could be temporarily blocked or constricted to one lane. Tenth Street will remain open to east-west traffic during the process.
The facade inspection was ordered by university officials after they noticed that two large stone panels on the east face of the building had become loose during recent heavy winds. The panels, weighing about 300 pounds each, were removed.
Terry Clapacs, IU vice president for administration, said the university cannot take any chances that a stone might fall, especially in an area that is heavily used by students and faculty. He ordered that a thorough examination of the stones, from both the outside and inside, be conducted.
The 12-story Wells Library building was opened in 1969.
