IU expert available Tuesday to comment on the No Child Left Behind Act

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Feb. 12, 2007

EDITORS: Jonathan Plucker, director of the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy (CEEP) at Indiana University Bloomington, will be available on Tuesday (Feb. 13), to comment on final recommendations of the Commission on No Child Left Behind for the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Commission on No Child Left Behind, co-chaired by former Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson and former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes, formed as an independent, bipartisan study group a year ago. Members, including Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy, have analyzed effects of the legislation and will recommend changes and modifications to Congress and the Bush Administration tomorrow morning. Aside from the co-chairs, all members of the commission sit on either House or Senate education committees.

Jonathan Plucker, director of the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy (CEEP) at Indiana University, has analyzed the effects of No Child Left Behind in the state of Indiana. A CEEP Policy Brief in 2005 took stock of the implementation up to that point (https://ceep.indiana.edu/projects/PDF/PB_V3N6_Spring_2005_NCLB.pdf ). At that time, Plucker said significant flaws in the program made it unlikely that any state would meet the program's goals by 2014.

CEEP promotes and supports rigorous, nonpartisan program evaluation and policy research primarily, but not exclusively, for education, human services and non-profit organizations. Its research uses both quantitative and qualitative methodologies.

Plucker can be reached at 812-855-4438 and jplucker@indiana.edu. To learn more about CEEP, go to https://ceep.indiana.edu.
