BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sara Phillips of Terre Haute, Ind., an incoming freshman at Indiana University, has been selected by the university as a Wells Scholar. The scholarship, named in honor of the late IU Chancellor Herman B Wells, ranks among the most competitive and prestigious awards offered by any American university.

Wells Scholars receive full tuition, fees and a living stipend for four years of study on the IU Bloomington campus. The program also offers special seminars, an optional year of study abroad and support for a summer research project or internship. The program emphasizes close interaction with faculty, academic and career advising, opportunities for community service and contact with distinguished visitors.

Wells Scholars are selected for having demonstrated character, leadership and distinction, both inside and outside of the classroom.

A National Merit Finalist and first-place winner in the National French Examination, Phillips graduated from Terre Haute North Vigo High School. She was a National Council of Teachers of English Writing Award winner and placed second in the Purdue High School Writing Contest with one of her short stories.

She spent the summer after her junior year studying in Brest, France, through the IU Honors Program in Foreign Languages and also won top honors in French throughout her four years at North Vigo High School.

Phillips was a three-year member of the All-State Honor Choir and vice president of her school's concert choir and a member of her church choir. She has also received top ratings in the Indiana state music competition in piano and was a member of her school's marching band.

She was an active participant in her school's theatre productions and musicals as an actress, singer and stage manager. She was a member of the Thespian Troupe, serving as president her senior year, and a member of the Indiana State University Summer Honors Program in Theatre. She was also a member of the Continental Corps and Knowledge Masters.

Phillips intends to pursue majors in French and linguistics.
