Welcome Week to greet new IU students

Approximately 7,000 Indiana University freshmen are expected to attend the annual Welcome Week program for new students that will begin on Wednesday (Aug. 28) and conclude with the first day of classes on Sept. 2.

Melanie Payne, director of Welcome Week and associate director of orientation programs, said several activities and events are planned to help acquaint new students with the campus, students, staff and faculty and with IU resources, opportunities and expectations.

The kick-off event will be the Freshman Induction Ceremony at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Aug. 28) in Assembly Hall. IU President Myles Brand and IU Bloomington Chancellor Sharon Stephens Brehm will preside at this traditional event that welcomes freshmen to the academic community.

A second major Welcome Week event is CultureFest, planned for 4:30 p.m. on Thursday (Aug. 29) at the IU Auditorium. This will include an orientation to the history and culture of IU, live music and cultural foods. As the keynote speaker, Emmy Award-wining producer Ray Blanco will discuss the importance of diversity in college life.

On Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. in Assembly Hall, there will be a celebration of the traditions and spirit of IU. This will be followed at 4 p.m. by IU's first football game of the season against William & Mary.

Other aspects of Welcome Week will focus on academics, IU resources and opportunities for student involvement through events such as academic orientation, resource and campus open houses, residence center events, recreational activities and social events.
