Historic preservation conference scheduled in Terre Haute

The 34th Annual Cornelius O'Brien Conference on Historic Preservation is expected to attract 150 people to Terre Haute for the Sept. 19-21 event.

Hoosiers interested in historic preservation will attend the daily activities at the event that is headquartered at the Holiday Inn, 3300 U.S. 41 South. The conference is co-sponsored by the Indiana University Committee on Historic Preservation, the Indiana Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, and the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana.

Keynote speakers will be Ray Saurez, author of The Old Neighborhood, which views urban flight and subsequent revitalization efforts in the United States, and Bruce Bradbury, whose firm revitalized the manufacture of reproduction wallpaper. Saurez, a senior correspondent with the Jim Lehrer News Hour, will speak at noon on Saturday (Sept. 21). Bradbury will present a coast-to-coast slide tour of arts and crafts interiors on Friday evening.

Other conference activities include a tour of the historic Terre Haute Brewing Company and Tap Room, topical sessions on smart growth and farmland production, and either a walking tour of historic churches in Terre Haute or a visit to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College.
