Symposium to mark 40th anniversary of federal Fair Housing Act

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Law Review, a legal periodical edited and managed by students at Indiana University School of Law-Indianapolis, will host a symposium celebrating the 40th anniversary of the passage of the federal law designed to eliminate housing discrimination and segregation.

Titled "The Fair Housing Act After 40 Years: Continuing the Mission to Eliminate Housing Discrimination and Segregation," the symposium will be held April 3 and 4, in the Wynne Courtroom of IU School of Law-Indianapolis, located at 530 W. New York St., on the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus.

The event will begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday with the keynote address by Theodore M. Shaw, Esq., director-counsel and president of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund Inc. Shaw's topic will be "The Place of Race in Post-Affirmative Action America."

Symposium activities will continue at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, which marks the passage of four decades since the tragic assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose inspiring message of equal opportunity for every person and commitment to changing views and attitudes are embodied in the Fair Housing Act.

Following opening remarks by IU School of Law-Indianapolis Dean Gary R. Roberts, IUPUI History Associate Professor Monroe H. Little Jr., director of the African American and African Diaspora Studies Program, will present a special tribute to King.

Professor john a. powell, executive director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State University, Moritz College of Law, will deliver the morning address from 10:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. on April 4. Professor powell, the Gregory H. Williams Chair in Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at Ohio State, will present "Tracking the Fair Housing Act from Conception to Implementation and the Need for Amendments to Address Structural and Implicit Bias Impediments that Obstruct Fair Housing."

As speaker during the luncheon from 12:30 p.m. to 1:20 p.m. on April 4, Florence Wagman Roisman, William F. Harvey Professor of Law at IU School of Law-Indianapolis, will present "Fair and Open Housing in this Human Rights Era."

The closing session of the symposium features a second speech by Shaw, who will talk on "Post-Affirmative Action America -- A Vision for the Future" from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The registration fee for the April 4 symposium events is $20 for IU School of Law-Indianapolis students and faculty; $75 for others. The fee covers meals, materials and parking in the open lot adjacent to the law school.

Tickets for the April 3 keynote address, free of charge, are required and will be forwarded by e-mail to registrants.

Total CLE credit for both events is 6.8 hours.
