IU Alumni Association elects new officers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Stephen C. Moberly of Bloomington, Ind., will take office as chairman of the Indiana University Alumni Association on July 1.

Joining Moberly as the 2008-09 officers of the IUAA are chairwoman-elect Donna Berry Spears of Richmond, Ind.; vice chairman Michael Barlow of Chicago; secretary Brian P. Williams of Evansville, Ind.; and treasurer Frank D. Otte of Indianapolis. The slate of officers was elected in April.

Joining these officers on the IUAA Board of Managers are MaryEllen Kiley Bishop of Carmel, Ind., who will become immediate past-chairwoman on July 1, and Tom Martz, president and CEO of the IUAA. The board provides general management and supervision of the affairs of the IUAA. The officers serve one-year terms, and the secretary and treasurer may serve up to five consecutive terms. Advising the Board of Managers is an 84-member Executive Council. Ten at-large members also were elected in April.

Moberly retired in 2006 after a 40-year career, including 30 years practicing law in Shelbyville, Ind., followed by 10 years as the chief executive officer of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. He received his bachelor's degree in 1963 and a law degree in 1966, both from IU.

An IUAA life member, he is a former member of the Executive Council and chaired the IUAA Strategic Directions Task Force in 2004-05. He is past president of the John Whittenberger Society and the Shelby County (Ind.) Chapter of the IUAA. He is president of the Society of Aeons and sits on the board of trustees of the Monroe County Public Library. He received the IUAA President's Award in 1995. Moberly and his wife, Sandy (Schultz), live in Bloomington.

Donna Berry Spears

Donna Berry Spears

Spears is a real-estate consultant with Lingle Real Estate in Richmond, Ind. She received her bachelor's degree in 1979 and her master's degree in 1981, both from IU. Previously an at-large member of IUAA's Executive Council, Spears served as secretary for the IUAA Board of Managers for five years. She also has served on the board of the Society of the Friends of Music and the Monroe County (Ind.) Chapter of the IUAA. A former member of the IU East Advisory Board and the 2004-05 IUAA Strategic Directions Task Force, Spears is a life member of the IUAA. In 2006, she received the Gertrude Rich Award for her service to the Alumni Association. Spears and her husband, Alan, live in Richmond.

Barlow, a professional practicing artist and arts educator, received his bachelor's degree in 1985 from IU. He teaches visual arts programs for inner-city at-risk youth at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College Chicago and the Marwen Art Foundation. Barlow conducts professional development workshops for teachers with Chicago Public Schools as well as national Advanced Placement summer institutes for high school teachers. He maintains an art studio practice and business, and his works have been exhibited nationally. Barlow served as a member at large on the IUAA Executive Council. He and his wife, Gwendolyn May-Barlow, live in Chicago.

Brian P. Williams

Brian P. Williams

Williams received his bachelor's degree in 1978 and his law degree in 1981, both from IU, and is a partner at Kahn, Dees, Donovan & Kahn in Evansville, Ind. He is vice president of the IU School of Law--Bloomington alumni board. He received the school's Distinguished Service Award in 1998. A life member of the IUAA, Williams served on the 2004-05 IUAA Strategic Directions Task Force, the IUAA Executive Council and is a former officer of the Greater Evansville Chapter of the IUAA. Williams and his wife, Barbara (Coyle), live in Evansville. Their sons, Seth and Nathan, attend IU Bloomington.

Frank D. Otte

Frank D. Otte

Otte, an attorney with Clark, Quinn, Moses, Scott & Grahn in Indianapolis, received his bachelor's degree in 1993 and his law degree in 1997, both from IU. An IUAA life member, he is former member of the IUAA Executive Council and a current member of the Well House Society. Otte served as a member of the IU Board of Trustees from 1995 to 1997 and served on two search committees for the IUAA president and CEO. He is a member of the Immaculate Heart Catholic Parish in Indianapolis and serves as assistant scout master for the Indianapolis-based Boy Scout Troop 174. Otte and his wife, Julie (Elam), live in Indianapolis.

The new officers and at-large members all begin their terms on July 1.
