IU’s 2008 Summer Music Festival welcomes Canadian Brass and Chanticleer

Both well-known groups have Jacobs School connections

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 16, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Grammy Award-winning, all-male chorus Chanticleer and internationally renowned quintet Canadian Brass -- both of which have strong ties to Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music -- will play at IU's Summer Music Festival July 27 and Aug. 3, respectively.

Chanticleer

The San Francisco-based Chanticleer, which will perform July 27, has been called "the world's reigning male chorus" by The New Yorker magazine and has been praised by the San Francisco Chronicle for its "tonal luxuriance and crisply etched clarity." The group includes Dylan Hostetter, an IU alumnus who studied voice in the Jacobs School's Early Music Institute with Paul Elliot and Paul Hillier.

Matthew Oltman, Chanticleer's musical director, said playing at IU is exciting because of the group's many connections with the Jacobs School of Music.

"We've had many singers in Chanticleer who have been students at IU or studied with professors who have taught at IU," said Oltman. "IU is a hub of musical activity, so we are always honored to play there."

Known as "an orchestra of voices," Chanticleer's 12 vocalists (with voices ranging from countertenor to bass) are known for a wide range of vocal literature spanning different genres and time periods, from Renaissance to jazz, and from gospel to new music.

Canadian Brass

Canadian Brass -- which formed nearly 40 years ago in Toronto, Ontario -- is known as much for its charming personality and rapport with audiences as it is for the Baroque music that has become its trademark. From formal classical concerts to music punctuated by lively dialogue and theatrical effects, the "fabulous five" are now more relevant than ever as they travel the world mentoring the next generation of brass performers in master classes and appearing on programs such as The Tonight Show, The Today Show, Entertainment Tonight and numerous PBS specials, among other programs.

The Washington Post wrote this about the Canadian Brass: "The enthralling sound of a brass choir ... programs that feature virtuosic musicianship, masterful interpretations and flashes of humor ... repertoire that encompasses Bach to blues -- all these ingredients make the Canadian Brass the world's leading brass ensemble."

The quintet, which includes internationally acclaimed hornist and IU Jacobs School of Music faculty member Jeff Nelsen, will perform Aug. 3. Nelsen said he is excited to perform where he is more often seen as a pedagogue.

"It's wonderful for me to have made Bloomington and Indiana University my home," Nelsen said. "Getting to show off my Canadian Brass family at home is thrilling. Canadian Brass represents what we teach at the Jacobs School of Music: how to perform beautiful music well, and how the joy of performance connects to an audience. You can come, sit back and enjoy seeing our work at play."
