IU GLBTAA awards two scholarships

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 23, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana University Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Alumni Association (GLBTAA) has awarded its 2008-09 academic scholarships to Sarah Rondot of Bloomington and Radley Alcantara of Portage, Ind. Both attend IU Bloomington.

Rondot, who received a $2,000 scholarship, is a senior studying English and gender studies. She serves as a teaching assistant for "Sociology-338: Gender Roles" and has been an intern for the Indiana Review literary magazine.

Alcantara, who received a $500 scholarship, is a sophomore studying finance and real estate entrepreneurship. He is the CommUNITY Educator for Foster Residence Hall and is active with the Civic Leadership Development organization.

IU GLBTAA academic scholarships recognize and reward students on any IU campus who have improved the climate and atmosphere on their IU campus for GLBT students, faculty, staff or alumni, while also achieving their own academic and personal goals. Academic scholarships are awarded each semester.

Now in its 11th year, the GLBTAA awarded $7,670 in scholarships, grants and awards during its 10th anniversary year and has allocated $5,000 for scholarships and $1,000 for mini-grants for this fiscal year.

"It's been a very rewarding experience for the GLBTAA board to award these dollars to our very deserving students," said Rob DeCleene, president of the IU GLBTAA. "This organization continues to grow and become more visible and supportive of our GLBTAA students -- something our entire membership has helped to achieve."

The next deadline for students to apply for a scholarship is Nov. 15. Applications are available online at https://alumni.indiana.edu/glbtaa.

The IU GLBTAA is an affiliate group of the IU Alumni Association, which is dedicated to serving the university and its diverse alumni, students and friends. As one of the nation's largest alumni organizations, serving more than 505,000 graduates worldwide, the IUAA provides many programs and services to its members, nonmember alumni, and the university.
