Indiana University Latino Alumni Association announces reunion set for Oct. 3-5

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Aug. 19, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University Latino Alumni Association is preparing for its first Latino Alumni Weekend. The event will be held Oct. 3-5 at IU Bloomington in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The IU Latino Alumni Weekend will begin that Friday afternoon with registration, workshops, dinner and a social event. Saturday's events will include an awards luncheon, workshops, the IU Latino Cultural Center's 35th anniversary panel and an IU vs. Michigan soccer game at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

The weekend concludes on Sunday with a brunch, group photo and giveaways. Other big area activities that weekend include the Lotus World Music and Arts Festival in Bloomington and the Circle City Classic in Indianapolis.

"The upcoming Latino alumni reunion is a demonstration of the growing Latino community of Indiana University graduates around the world," said Gavin Mariano, president of the IU Latino Alumni Association. "Our goal is to provide alumni a warm experience of reunification while celebrating the vast accomplishments made by so many -- no matter how big or small.

"The IU experience is a big part of what makes up the personal and professional undertakings of our alumni. Staying connected with IU via membership and attendance at events like these only enhances that experience," Mariano added.

The highlight of the Latino Alumni Weekend will be the awards luncheon on Oct. 4. For the sixth consecutive year, a distinguished Latino alumnus or alumna who has made a remarkable impact in the Latino community will be honored. Scholarships to Latino undergraduates will also be awarded.

Founded in 2000 by IU Latino student advocate Georgia Burgueno, MSW'04, the IU Latino Alumni Association is an affiliate group of the IU Alumni Association. The group carries out its mission through its 14 executive board members and ex-officio members representing 3,200 alumni throughout the world.
