IU's McKaig, Goodman, Watt take to the waters in cardboard boats to raise scholarship funds

Competitors in the 2007 Cardboard Boat Regatta at Indiana University Bloomington
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Sailing into the sunset? Hardly. Richard McKaig, dean of students and vice provost for student affairs at Indiana University Bloomington, will race across the IU Outdoor Pool -- in a cardboard boat -- on Friday (Sept. 26) with Robert M. Goodman, dean of the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. All in good fun -- and to raise money for student scholarships.
"I am looking forward to leaving Dean Goodman in my wake as I speed across the pool," said McKaig, who retires next summer. "I also appreciate the cause -- raising money for scholarships recognizing student leadership. I have attended several of the past regattas -- It looks like fun from the pool deck. Since this is my last year as Dean, like a fifth-year senior, I have to do everything I have not had a chance to be before. I am hoping it will be a warm September day."
Goodman and McKaig, along with Stephen Watt, associate dean for strategic planning for the College of Arts and Sciences, will inaugurate the Dean's Challenge at the 8th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta, which begins at 4 p.m. at the IU Outdoor Pool, at the corner of Fee and 17th streets. The event is sponsored by the School of HPER's Council for Advancing Student Leadership and raises money for the group's Annual Top 10 Student Leaders Scholarship, which is available to students campuswide.
"Dean McKaig is dreaming about his upcoming retirement if he thinks he will cross the pool before I do," Goodman said. "The School of HPER represents the best in fitness and I can't let my colleagues down by coming in second. But, in either case, the scholarship for student leaders will come in first and that way, we are all winners."
The event is free and open to the public. It will include live music, free food from area vendors and prizes. Each year hundreds of students, faculty, staff and community members turn out to watch the brave and boisterous crews command handmade boats the length of the 50-meter pool. The boats can be made only of cardboard and duct tape.
Teams will be racing against each other and the clock in three divisions --Campus Housing, Greek Groups and Independent. Awards will be given to the fastest team in each division as well as overall. Special awards will also be given for "Most Creative Boats." McKaig, Goodman and Watt will face off in boats made by CASL members.
