IU Jacobs School of Music announces new, free podcast selections

IU's Jacobs School offers free podcasts.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University's world-renowned Jacobs School of Music is sharing its performances with the world -- free -- with a season-ending musical celebration online. Three years ago, Jacobs was at the leading edge of a trend to "bring the arts to the people" online so that a worldwide audience can enjoy the school's operas, ballets and musical performances from the comfort of their home computers.

The most recent podcast update, located at music.indiana.edu/iumusiclive, includes the following selections, also available as MP3 downloads:

  • "Nimrod" from Variations on an Original Theme "Enigma," Op. 36 by Edward Elgar. Performed by the IU Festival Orchestra, Xian Zhang, conductor, on July 17, 2008, in the Musical Arts Center.
  • Molto Allegro from Symphony No . 41 in C Major, K.551 "Jupiter" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Performed by the IU Symphony Orchestra, Cliff Colnot, conductor, on Aug. 8, 2008, in the Musical Arts Center.
  • Divertissement by Jean Françaix. Performed by Trio Cayenne: Steve Cohen, clarinet; Mark Ostoich, oboe; William Ludwig, bassoon, on Sept. 16, 2008, in Ford Hall.
  • "While by my Sheep" and "From Heaven Above." Performed by the IU Brass Choir, Edmund Cord, director.
  • Pastorale ad libitum: Largo from Concerto grosso in G minor, Op. 6 No. 8 "Christmas" by Arcangelo Corelli. Performed by the Baroque Orchestra, Stanley Ritchie, conductor.
  • "Sweet Little Jesus Boy" and "Some Children See Him" arranged by Adam Burnette. Performed by Sylvia McNair, soprano, and Adam Burnette, piano.
  • "Ah Bublein Klein" from The Merry Wives of Windsor by Otto Nicolai. Performed by IU Opera Theater on Oct. 23, 2008, in the Musical Arts Center with the IU Symphony Orchestra, David Effron, conductor.

In addition to the podcasts, the IU Jacobs School of Music Recording Arts Department, directed by Konrad Strauss, updates its on-demand streaming video player on a regular basis with recent performances in the Musical Arts Center.
