An opening reception for the Overseas Study Exhibition and BFA Painting show is scheduled for Dec. 4 (Friday), at 7 p.m., in the SoFA Gallery, 1201 E. Seventh St. The exhibition will remain on display through Dec. 5.

Additionally, there will be a Bachelor of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition, Dec. 8-12 (Tuesday-Saturday). The opening reception for the BFA Thesis Exhibition will be Dec. 11 (Friday), from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the SoFA Gallery.

Overseas Study Exhibition

Each year, the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts and the Indiana University Office of Overseas Studies partner to offer summer programs in Europe for SoFA students.

The Overseas Study exhibit will feature artworks produced by students who took part in one of three study abroad programs taught by members of the IU Fine Arts faculty. Edward Bernstein taught printmaking and bookmaking in Venice, Italy; Tim Kennedy taught drawing in Florence, Italy; and Arthur Liou taught photography in Tokyo.

"Doing watercolor and drawing from the landscape in and around Florence provides students on the summer program a fun and enriching experience," said Kennedy, a senior lecturer in painting. "It is a way for students to become intimately familiar with the birthplace of the Renaissance in a way that is unlike any other."

Liou, associate professor and area head of digital arts at IU's School of Fine Arts, said his photography students will feature two projects in the exhibition: The first relates to "water" themes and will display work that the students also exhibited at the Osaka Maritime Museum in Japan. The second is a collaborative portrait project that the students created with Japanese students who hosted them overseas. "As a faculty member, I was blessed with the experience of working with a group of talented, thoughtful and fun-loving young artists while immersed in an exotic foreign culture," Liou said.

BFA Thesis Exhibition

The BFA Thesis Exhibition will feature artworks created by undergraduate students from the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts in the areas of graphic design, metals and photography.
