Puppets and their people appear in Broadway's "Avenue Q," coming to IU Auditorium April 27 and 28.

This puppet show for adults tells the story of a puppet named Princeton, a wide-eyed recent college graduate who moves to New York City with big dreams and very little money. The only apartment he can afford is on Avenue Q, where former child star Gary Coleman is the doorman and the neighbors are quirky: There's Trekkie Monster, an Internet addict; Christmas Eve, a therapist with no clients; Rod, a repressed broker; and Kate, a cute nursery school teacher. Ultimately, Princeton discovers that everyone is looking for the same things he is -- a decent job, a stable relationship and a "purpose" -- and he learns that the real world isn't so bad after all.

With music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, Avenue Q opened on Broadway in 2003 and won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Book, Best Score and Best Musical. Avenue Q has a sketch comedy vibe and has been reviewed as similar to such shows as "The Office," "Family Guy," and "Saturday Night Live."

"This cutting-edge, hilariously irreverent show is not for the kids, but it is for anyone who has ever struggled with finding their 'purpose' in life -- which is, of course, pretty much everyone," said Doug Booher, director of IU Auditorium. "It will bring much of our audience right back to their post-college days."

The New York Times called Avenue Q " ... a breakthrough musical of a very different stripe. Savvy, sassy and delicious!" and Entertainment Weekly dubbed it "one of the funniest shows you're ever likely to see!"
