Indiana University Board of Trustees gains two new members

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana Gov. Joe Kernan in July named a retired Gary, Ind., physician and a financial services executive from Carmel, Ind., as the newest members of the Indiana University Board of Trustees.

Clarence Boone, from Gary, and Jeffrey Cohen, from Carmel, were appointed to 3-year terms. Later in the month, the governor announced that Bloomington resident and board vice president Stephen Ferguson, who has served as a trustee since 1998, was reappointed to another 3-year term. In July IU alumni also re-elected Sue H. Talbot of Bloomington to her second 3-year term on the board.

Boone and Cohen joined the nine-member Board of Trustees for its August meeting in Indianapolis.

Boone, a retired obstetrician and gynecologist, has long been active in civic, medical and IU circles through his involvement in and leadership of various organizations and committees, such as the Gary Citywide Development Corp., Lake County Medical Society, IU Foundation, IU Alumni Association, Chancellor's Advisory Council and Vision Task Force for IU Northwest, and the Advisory Council to the Dean of the IU School of Medicine. He is the co-founder of the Neal/Marshall Alumni Club of the IUAA. His many awards include the Sagamore of the Wabash, IU's Distinguished Alumni Award, Spirit of Scouting Award from the Calumet Council Boy Scouts of America, Alan Guttenmacher Distinguished Service Award from Planned Parenthood Federation of America and induction into the Gary Steel City Hall of Fame. Boone earned two degrees from IU, a bachelor's of science degree in anatomy and physiology in 1953 and a medical degree in 1956.

Cohen is the managing director of McDonald Financial Group in Indianapolis. He also earned two degrees from IU, a bachelor's of science degree in business in 1986 and a law degree in 1989. He practiced law for several years before moving into the investments field. His civic and IU-related activities include service on the boards of directors for the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis, VEI (a subsidiary of Community Hospital) and the Indianapolis/Marion County Library Foundation. He is a member of the IU Varsity Club, Hoosier Hundred Scholars, IU Alumni Association, I-Men's Association and Sigmi Phi Epsilon fraternity. He also was a member of various legal associations.

Trustees Stephen Backer, of Indianapolis, and Peter Obremskey, of Lebanon, Ind., were not reappointed. Both had completed two 3-year terms. By law, the governor appoints six members of the IU Board of Trustees and IU alumni elect three.
