BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Forty-two undergraduates at Indiana University Bloomington and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis have been selected as recipients of the prestigious Cox Scholarship for 2010-11.

Now in its sixth year, the Cox Scholarship program was started with a generous $15 million contribution from IU alumnus Jesse Cox and wife, Beulah. A later gift from their estate brought the total for the scholarship fund to $92 million, the largest gift ever received for scholarships at the university.

The Coxes initiated the scholarship funds at both IU Bloomington and IUPUI to reward students who balance work and school in the pursuit of their degrees, just as Jesse Cox did during the 1930s.

Always determined and enterprising, Jesse Cox began his entrepreneurial career with a transit and mimeograph service while in college at IU Bloomington. Following his graduation, he and Beulah started the J.H. Cox Manufacturing Co., a wholesale venetian blind company. They then purchased a small bankrupt company and started the Aero Blind and Drapery Co. They turned this company into the leading window treatment company in the upper Midwest. After selling this company in 1982, they next went on to develop businesses in both agriculture and commercial real estate in Monroe, Boone, Hamilton, and Putnam counties.

"To Jesse and Beulah Cox, nothing was more precious or necessary than a solid education. The couple, who didn't have children of their own, wanted to ensure that deserving and industrious young people have access to higher education and to the benefits an education provides." said Gene Tempel, president of the IU Foundation. "Jesse and Beulah would be proud that their scholarships are supporting so many students. This represents approximately $700,000 in student support."

The Jesse H. and Beulah Chanley Cox Scholarship fund is IU's most charitable merit-based scholarship for working students who are in-state residents. The renewable scholarship provides 75 percent of the estimated cost of attendance at IU Bloomington or IUPUI.
