This year, students are being asked to reflect on comments that the Rev. Jesse Jackson made during his address at the 2010 community King Day celebration, "Don't admire him. Follow him. You can admire him from afar. To follow him, you have to work -- you have to sacrifice."

Essay writers are being asked to respond to a related question: "What sacrifice(s) has someone you admire made in order to follow King and sustain his legacy, as the Rev. Jackson suggests we should?"

Successful essays -- in length of 1,000 to 1,500 words -- will answer the question, make specific reference not only to the writer's personal experience and observations, but also to King's life, times and writings. Previous first-place winners are not eligible.

Prizes will be awarded in both the graduate and undergraduate categories. First place winners each will receive a 32 GB iPad. All essays must be submitted, using Microsoft Word, for consideration by 5 p.m. on Nov. 19 to mlkjr@indiana.edu. Inquiries may also be made to that same e-mail address.

Writers should place their names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses on a cover sheet, but their names should not appear within the text of their essays.

The winners will be recognized during IU's 2011 King Day Leadership Breakfast on Jan. 17.
