BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- One of the finest Jazz Ensembles from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music will perform Sunday, Jan. 23, at 2 p.m. as part of the 10-day grand opening of The Palladium in the Carmel Center for the Performing Arts. The concert is free and open to the public.

Brent Wallarab, Jacobs assistant professor of music, will conduct the ensemble of graduate and undergraduate students in a program featuring the music of Count Basie.

"It's an honor representing the Jacobs School of Music and Jazz Department Chair David Baker for the opening ceremonies of this new world-class performance venue," said Wallarab. "I hope there can be an ongoing relationship between Indiana University and the Carmel Palladium for many years to come."

The Jacobs Jazz Studies Department offers four large jazz ensembles, the Latin Jazz Ensemble and several jazz combos. Both large and small ensembles play music that encompasses virtually all styles and eras of jazz: classic repertory from the distant and near past, contemporary music and music that looks forward and embraces new and exploratory styles. The performance and writing opportunities which are a part of the program are many and varied. In addition, students in the Jazz Studies Department participate in a variety of other Jacobs School ensembles.

The Palladium is the centerpiece of the Carmel Center for the Performing Arts, and the opening celebration is scheduled for the week of Jan. 22-30, 2011.
