Zorn appointed IU faculty athletics representative

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 9, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Kurt Zorn, a professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, has been appointed faculty athletics representative for Indiana University, IU President Michael A. McRobbie announced today.

Zorn will represent the IU Bloomington faculty in matters dealing with intercollegiate athletics, including issues related to institutional control, academic integrity and rules compliance. He also will represent the university faculty to the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Big Ten Conference.

"The faculty representative plays an essential role in maintaining the proper balance between academics and athletics," McRobbie said. "Kurt Zorn will do an outstanding job in representing the faculty and making certain that academic excellence and compliance are top priorities for Indiana University athletics. I appreciate his willingness to take on this important responsibility."

Zorn will take over as representative on July 1, 2011. He serves as associate vice provost for undergraduate education and has been an IU Bloomington faculty member since 1980.

"I am honored to be selected, and I look forward to working with President McRobbie, those in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, our talented student-athletes and faculty leaders to ensure the academic integrity of IU's athletic program and its compliance with Big Ten and NCAA rules and regulations," Zorn said.

Zorn will succeed Bruce Jaffee, professor of business economics and public policy in the Kelley School of Business, who has held the position since 2003. Jaffee also served on and chaired the Bloomington Faculty Council athletics committee, starting in 1990. He is retiring this year but will continue to serve as executive director of the Kelley School's Institute for International Business.

"At the same time I welcome Kurt Zorn to this key position, I want to thank Bruce Jaffee for his extraordinary service," said Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. "For over 20 years, Bruce's insight and dedication have helped our student athletes fulfill their academic potential and represent IU with distinction and integrity."

Zorn served as interim dean of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs in 2007-08 and associate dean for academic and fiscal affairs at SPEA from 2001-08. His research areas include state and local finance, transportation safety, economic development and gaming policy.

NCAA bylaws require each member institution to designate a faculty representative to serve as a liaison between the institution and its athletics department and to represent the institution to its conference and the NCAA. At IU Bloomington, the representative works in conjunction with the athletics committee of the Bloomington Faculty Council to ensure academic integrity, facilitate institutional control and enhance the student-athlete experience.
