FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 14, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Hannah L. Buxbaum, executive associate dean for academic affairs and John E. Schiller Chair of Legal Ethics at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, will inaugurate the newly created Schiller Chair position with a lecture on Wednesday, April 20, at 4 p.m. in the law school's Moot Court Room.

Hannah Buxbaum

Hannah Buxbaum

An expert in private international law and international litigation and jurisdiction, Buxbaum has titled her lecture "Class Actions in the Global Economy." She will discuss the influence of the U.S. class-action system on procedural reform in other countries, exploring the consequences of exporting American procedural, professional and ethical norms to foreign legal systems.

Buxbaum joined the IU law faculty in 1997 after practicing in the New York and Frankfurt offices of Davis Polk and Wardwell. She is a recipient of the school's Leon H. Wallace Teaching Award and has twice won the Gavel Award for outstanding contributions to the graduating class. Buxbaum holds a B.A. cum laude from Cornell University and a J.D. magna cum laude from Cornell Law School, where she was elected to Order of the Coif. She also holds an LL.M. summa cum laude from the University of Heidelberg.

John E. Schiller

The Schiller Chair was endowed in 2010 by David Henry Jacobs Jr. in honor of John E. Schiller, a Cleveland business litigation lawyer. Jacobs became acquainted with Schiller in 2006 when he hired the attorney to represent him in a complex and highly contentious lawsuit. "During the course of the litigation, I witnessed John's integrity, judgment, passionate belief in the legal system and exceptional work ethic," Jacobs said. Observing these traits inspired Jacobs to make a gift to the Maurer School of Law that will help advance the quality of its students' legal education.

"The law school has a tradition of holding inaugural lectures for endowed chairs," said Lauren Robel, Dean and Val Nolan Professor of Law. "The Schiller Chair is a moving tribute to the rectitude and integrity of a particular lawyer, but its effect will be felt by the entire law school community."

Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music is named for Jacobs' parents, Barbara and David H. Jacobs, in honor of the family's $40.6 million gift to the school in 2005. It was during the announcement of that gift to the School of Music that Jacobs first became acquainted with Dean Robel, which led to the establishment of the Schiller Chair.

A reception will follow the lecture, which is free and open to the public.
