BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The African American Dance Company at Indiana University will present its annual spring concert on April 9 at 8 p.m. at the Buskirk Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. in Bloomington.

The concert will be the first in a series of three Saturday concerts celebrating the African American Arts Institute's 30 years of excellence.

The African American Dance Company has chosen the theme "Rooted to Manifested" for the concert. The theme's name is drawn from the closing piece, "Rooted, Grounded, Manifested," which will utilize multimedia elements such as video footage to illustrate the cycle of life. The spring concert's theme also denotes a historical theme, pointing to the ways that the dance company is rooted in certain traditions and has grown and blossomed from those early roots, said Iris Rosa, its director and an associate professor in the IU Department of African American and African Diaspora Studies.

The concert will feature several collaborative pieces. Rosa and associate instructor Maliwan Diemer have been working with students throughout the year in the development of their original ideas through collaboratively choreographed pieces. The students chose the theme "Separate But Equal (?)" "to explore and illustrate through movement, music, poetry and song ideas such as exclusion, marginalization, separation and segregation in many aspects of life," Rosa said.

The company also will collaborate with students from the IU English Department's Graduate Writing Program.

Advance tickets are available at the Sunrise Box Office, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave., and cost $8 for students and seniors and $13 for adults. Tickets on the day of the show will cost $12 for students and seniors and $17 for adults. The African American Arts Institute is offering a special IU student rate of $5 for all of its spring concerts. These require an IU I.D. and have a limit of two tickets.
