IU Journalism School's lecture series to feature columnist David Brooks and several alumni who edit magazines

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oct. 28, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- New York Times columnist David Brooks will lead off the Indiana University School of Journalism's fall speaker series with a talk at 7 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 1) at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E. Kirkwood Ave., in downtown Bloomington.

The series will continue on Tuesday, Nov. 15 with a panel discussion featuring IU journalism alumni who edit several of today's leading magazines. That event will begin at 7 p.m. in room 220 of Ernie Pyle Hall, 940 E. Seventh St.

Both events are free and open to the public

The School of Journalism Speaker Series gives students and area residents the opportunity to meet with some of the top media professionals in the country. This year, the series has featured panels of distinguished alumni as speakers in honor of the 100th anniversary of journalism education at IU.

About David Brooks:

Brooks has been an op-ed columnist at the New York Times since 2003, and had been senior editor at The Weekly Standard and a contributor to Newsweek and the Atlantic Monthly. He is a commentator on PBS NewsHour, and appears regularly on CNN and National Public Radio.

In the mid-1990s, Brooks reported for the Wall Street Journal from Brussels, covering Russia, the Middle East, South Africa and Europe. He is author of several books, including The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character and Achievement, published earlier this year; Bobos In Paradise: The New Upper Class and How They Got There; and On Paradise Drive: How We Live Now (And Always Have) in the Future Tense. He edited the anthology, Backward and Upward: the New Conservative Writing.

Brooks' visit is co-sponsored by the IU Center on Congress, which is led by former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton. The center aims to educate Americans about the role of representative government through events, outreach and resource development.
