Documentary film explores Middle East relations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nov. 14, 2011

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Filmmaker Jacob Bender's Out of Cordoba will be screened at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, at IU Cinema. The documentary film explores Jewish and Muslim relationships by examining the lives of two of the most important thinkers to emerge from medieval Spain: Averroes the Muslim, and his Jewish counterpart, Rabbi Moses Maimonides.

The film explores the legacy of the two philosophers, as well as their contemporary importance to interfaith relations and for those struggling against religious extremism.

Bender will speak at 3 p.m. Thursday as part of the IU Cinema's Jorgensen Guest Filmmaker Lecture Series, made possible through support of the Ove W. Jorgensen Foundation.

No ticket is required to attend Bender's lecture. For free tickets to the film series, visit the IU Auditorium Box Office.

The event is sponsored by the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, the Robert A. and Sandra S. Borns Jewish Studies Program, the Medieval Studies Institute and the Center for the Study of the Middle East. It is also part of IU's Themester 2011: "Making War, Making Peace."
