BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Fresh from the triumphant revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman's "Follies," Broadway's sassy sweetheart Bernadette Peters will perform musical classics on the IU Auditorium stage at 8 p.m. Feb. 25.

Bernadette Peters

Perhaps most famous for her roles in Broadway musicals, Peters made her theatrical debut in "This Is Goggle" starring James Daly and Kim Hunter. Her first appearance on Broadway was in "Johnny-No Trump" in 1967, and the following year she starred in "George M!" as Josie Cohan, winning her a Theater World Award. Since the 1960s, Peters has been nominated for seven Tony Awards. She won her first Tony Award along with her second Drama Desk Award for her stellar performance in Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical "Song and Dance."

"Bernadette Peters has a voice of pure magic that has been immortalized through her unforgettable Broadway and major motion picture characters," IU Auditorium director Doug Booher said. "We are excited to be able to bring to our audience her raw talent as an actor, singer and comedian that will shine through during this incredible evening filled with memorable show tunes and stories about her life as a performer."

In June 1999, Peters earned her second Tony Award, her third Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award for her portrayal of Annie Oakley in the hit Broadway revival of "Annie Get Your Gun." Peters also received Tony nominations for her work in the 1992 musical "The Goodbye Girl," Stephen Sondheim's Pulitzer Prize-winning musical "Sunday in the Park With George," "Mack and Mabel" and "On The Town."

Last spring began with a new role for Peters as Sally in Sondheim and Goldman's nostalgic 1971 production, "Follies." The musical is set in the year it opened at Weismann Follies, an old theater that flourished in the first half of the 20th century but presently faces demolition. The theater's former members meet for one last reunion, and the characters remember their past experiences as stars of the stage. New York Magazine said, "Peters' 'Losing My Mind' -- performed with that tremulous, bird-on-a-wire brokenness she continues to refine and deepen -- is the torch song to end all torch songs." Throughout the years, Peters' unique and powerful voice has remained uninhibited and unwavering.

In addition to her impressive musical theater background, Peters has recently added author and songwriter to her list of achievements with The New York Times Best Seller children's book "Broadway Barks," named after the organization she co-founded with Mary Tyler Moore. Her second book, "Stella Is a Star," is about a dog who wishes to be a ballerina pig. Both books come with an original song, and the royalties are donated to her organization, Broadway Barks, which raises money and awareness for animal shelters and rescue.
