Area high school students can register for summer science, math tutoring at IU Bloomington

Two sessions of eight unique courses each limited to 13 registrants

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- For the third summer in a row, a small group of Ph.D. students in the College of Arts and Sciences, led by physics Ph.D. student Jake Bennett, will offer a summer tutoring program in science and mathematics for local high school students. The program began in summer 2010 and at the time offered only physics and mathematics tutoring.

"One of our goals in starting this program was to have a recurring educational resource for the local community," Bennett said. "This year we expanded the program to include biology and chemistry. This makes the newly renamed 'Foundations in Science and Mathematics' an even better resource for local high school students. We are bringing on additional graduate students who will have the opportunity to continue the program after the initial set of graduate students has left IU.

"I noticed a disconnect between what students know when they start these classes in high school and what they really need to know in order to be successful," Bennett said. "Our Foundations program is designed to help high school students prepare for and succeed in their high school science and math courses. We emphasize important introductory concepts and problem-solving skills, which will provide a strong foundation for later learning."

Foundations in Science and Mathematics will offer two summer sessions: June 18 to 29 and July 9 to 20. Classes will be held during the afternoon and early evening.

Courses offered are biology, advanced biology, chemistry, AP chemistry, physics, pre-calculus, AP physics and calculus. Classes meet in Swain Hall West, and participants may purchase temporary parking passes for the duration of the program. The program itself costs $15 per class. Class size is capped at 13 per course, and registration is online here.

"This program is a very cost-effective means of receiving extra instruction in physics and calculus," Bennett said. "Normally, 12 hours of private tutoring would cost a total of $300."
