IU Kelley School professor to receive Academy of Marketing Science's Distinguished Educator Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 2, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Rosann Spiro, professor of marketing at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business and executive director of its Center for Global Sales Leadership, will receive the 2012 Distinguished Marketing Educator Award from the Academy of Marketing Science.

Spiro, also a former chairwoman of the American Marketing Association, will receive the honor at the Academy of Marketing Science's annual conference May 15 to 19 in New Orleans.

She is being honored for her outstanding contributions to the sales management field, her commitment to education and mentorship, and her leadership within the American Marketing Association and other professional organizations.

"I am deeply honored," Spiro said. "When I look back at my career, I've received some awards, a couple of them like this one I'm very proud of, but at the end of the day so much of it is all about coming to work and enjoying what you do."

Dan Smith, dean of the Kelley School and a faculty colleague in the Department of Marketing, noted that Spiro's latest honor is appropriate, given her many contributions to the field.

"The Kelley School's strong global reputation can be traced largely to our faculty. Rosann Spiro has long been a pillar of excellence in the school," Smith said. Beyond the school, she is widely regarded as one of the world's thought leaders in the area of sales management. Her contributions to research and to classroom instruction through her books are immeasurable.

"She is certainly deserving of this most recent recognition. Her career achievements have been extraordinary, and she continues to be an inspiration to all of us," Smith added.

Spiro credits as an influence her mentor, Bill Perrault, who oversaw her Ph.D. at the University of Georgia. "Much of what I've done in my career has been payback -- payback to him through doing the same things for others that he did for me," she said.

She is co-author of one of the most cited textbooks in her field, "Management of the Sales Force," and launched a successful service-learning course, "Sales for Social Impact." The course provides international experience to students who worked with small entrepreneurs in Uganda and Guatemala.

This is the latest in a series of honors bestowed on Spiro. The American Marketing Association presented her with its Lifetime Achievement Award and its Excellence in Research Award. She also was an AMA faculty fellow three times between 1990 and 1993.

The Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management presented her with its Pi Sigma Epsilon Award for outstanding article of the year three times, in 1981, 1986 and 1996. Spiro came to the IU Kelley School in 1984 after serving on the faculty at the University of Tennessee. She chaired the school's marketing department from 2003 to 2009.
