IU Police Department's Butler and Rhodes promoted

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 3, 2012

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Two officers with the Indiana University Police Department on the Bloomington campus have been elevated to positions with university-wide responsibility, and charged with coordinating and tracking training and education requirements for IUPD.

Greg Butler was promoted to the rank of captain, with the title of director, public safety education; and David Rhodes was promoted to lieutenant, public safety education. Both bring lengthy records of law enforcement experience and accomplishment to these now university-wide roles and most recently have been responsible for managing the highly touted Indiana University Police Academy. They will continue to be responsible for that training center.

Both positions report to Jerry Minger, university director of public safety.

"These two supervisors have long and stellar histories of providing expert leadership, coordination and training to IU police officers and, through the IU Police Academy, law enforcement officers across the U.S.," Minger said. "We are highly fortunate to have their level of professionalism and experience within our ranks to oversee and manage education and training."

Butler has been the training section coordinator at IUPD Bloomington since 1995, a role that includes supervising the IU Police Academy. He was a member of the first academy class in 1972, before going to the U.S. Marine Corps. He returned to IUPD after retiring from the Marine Corps in 1994.

Rhodes has been a sergeant at IUPD Bloomington since 1995 and a member of the training section for 15 years. Rhodes has been a certified instructor for nearly 30 years and has been instrumental in coordinating training and supervising cadets in the academy.

Butler and Rhodes are both certified as Indiana Law Enforcement Master Instructors.

The Indiana University Police Department is composed of 150 sworn police officers on seven campuses across the state of Indiana.
