Academy Award-winning costume designer James Acheson to visit IU Cinema

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- What do Spidey's iconic red and blue suit, the elaborate dresses of 18th-century France and a Time Lord's unforgettable striped scarf have in common?
All three were costumes created by three-time Academy Award-winning designer James Acheson, who will visit IU's Bloomington campus this month to deliver a Jorgensen Guest Filmmaker Lecture at IU Cinema. The free lecture begins at 3 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17.
"James Acheson has been designing costumes for Hollywood for more than 30 years, earning him three Oscars and linking him to incredibly creative projects, including this summer's hotly anticipated Superman reboot, 'Man of Steel,'" IU Cinema director Jon Vickers said. "We're excited to welcome him to Bloomington to share his 35 years of experience on this part of the filmmaking process."
Acheson has designed costumes for dozens of feature films, including "Dangerous Liaisons," "Highlander," "The Man in the Iron Mask," all three of Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" films and Monty Python's "The Meaning of Life," as well as episodes of the long-running cult classic British television series "Doctor Who."
IU Cinema will screen four films featuring Acheson's work:
- 7 p.m. Jan. 15, "Spider-Man 2." Peter Parker's heroic alter ego meets mad scientist Dr. Octopus, who is terrorizing the city with his deadly bionic tentacles.
- 7 p.m. Jan. 17, "The Last Emperor." Follow the life of Puyi, the last Emperor of China and the 12th and final ruler of the Qing Dynasty.
- 6:30 p.m. Jan. 18, "Time Bandits." Kevin realizes his room is a portal and begins to travel with new friends, thanks to a map they've stolen showing holes in the "spacetime" fabric.
- 9:30 p.m. Jan. 18, "Brazil." Sam Lowry's life is transformed through a typographical error in a slapstick-style dystopian world run by a bureaucratic, totalitarian system.
Acheson's lecture is free and no tickets are required, while tickets for all films in the series are $3 each. Tickets can be purchased at the IU Auditorium Box Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday; one hour before any screening at the cinema; or by phone at 812-855-1103 for a $10 service fee per order.
The Jorgensen Guest Filmmaker Lecture Series is made possible by the support of the Ove W Jorgensen Foundation.
Acheson's visit is also being sponsored in part by IU's Sage Collection and the Department of Apparel Merchandising and Interior Design, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. Special thanks to Lindsay Hamman from the Indianapolis Museum of Art, which will present the film "Dangerous Liaisons" (1988) with Acheson at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18.
