Terry Allison named new IU South Bend chancellor

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Indiana University President Michael A. McRobbie announced the selection of Terry L. Allison as the new chancellor of the IU South Bend campus, subject to the approval of the IU Board of Trustees. Allison has been serving as provost and vice president of academic affairs at Governors State University in Illinois.
Allison has been at Governors State University, where he is also a professor of English, since 2010. From 2006 to 2010, he was dean of the College of Arts and Letters and a tenured English professor at California State University in Los Angeles. He was also a faculty member and served in a variety of roles at California State University, San Marcos, from 1991 to 2006.
"Terry brings to IU South Bend extensive experience in strategic planning, budgeting and institutional development, and a history of innovative, creative thinking," McRobbie said.
John Applegate, IU executive vice president for university regional affairs, planning and policy, said, "Most recently, Terry has charted a path for academic success and growth at Governors State University through the implementation of new educational programming and formation of strong community partnerships. Terry's visionary leadership makes him an ideal fit for the South Bend campus, as it seeks to strengthen the vital role it plays in the economic development of the region."
Allison was recommended by a search and screen committee led by William Lowe, chancellor at IU Northwest. He will succeed current IU South Bend Chancellor Una Mae Reck, who will retire as chancellor in June after having served as chief executive officer of the campus since 2002.

I will collaborate with all constituents to further academic excellence and student success, to add new programs that meet regional needs and to advance the partnerships of Indiana University to achieve the university's mission and vision."
In his current role, Allison has focused on improving academic quality, growing enrollment and ensuring cultural diversity at Governors State University through the creation of the university's first five-year academic master plan and implementation of new programming in, among other areas, information technology, community health, entrepreneurship and urban education.
At Governors State University, he has represented senior administration in the reaccreditation of programs in education, nursing, occupational therapy, physical therapy and public administration, and he began an accreditation effort for art and film. He has also served on a three-person executive leadership team that oversees planning and implementation of lower division programming, housing and marketing plans for the university.
As dean of the College of Arts and Letters at California State University in Los Angeles, he managed enrollment, facilities, personnel and academic quality issues and worked to establish several new programs and initiatives, including a new MFA in television, film and theater, and a strategic language initiative.
During his 15 years at California State University in San Marcos, Allison worked on numerous initiatives designed to transition the university from a start-up to an established campus. Over the years, his responsibilities steadily increased to include leadership responsibilities for finance, planning, administration and assessment.
Allison has a Ph.D. in literature and M.A. in comparative literature from the University of California, San Diego. He received a Master of Library and Information Science degree and an A.B. degree with honors in economics and political science from the University of California, Berkeley.
He is the author or editor of two books, "CSU Haiku" (Tajmika Press, 2011) and "States of Rage: Emotional Eruption, Violence and Social Change" (New York University Press, 1996), and numerous book chapters, journal articles and other creative works.
IU South Bend is one of the region's most dynamic forces in higher education and community partnerships. IU South Bend is the third largest campus of Indiana University with 8,300 students, over 800 faculty and staff, and more than 100 degree and certificate programs. The campus has a strong commitment to academic excellence. It offers the full collegiate experience including student housing, men's and women's NAIA basketball and a full complement of activities.
As chief executive officer of IU South Bend, the chancellor is responsible for the operation of the campus and reports to the IU president through the executive vice president for university regional affairs, planning and policy. The IU South Bend chancellor works with the chancellors and provost of IU's seven other campuses.
