Neal-Marshall Alumni Club reunion to be same weekend

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SEPT. 28, 2005

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University alumni, students and friends are invited to "Come Alive in 2005" at Homecoming events Oct. 6-8 in Bloomington. In addition, the Neal-Marshall Alumni Club will hold its Reunion XVII in Bloomington, Oct. 7-9.

Homecoming festivities for alumni will begin Friday, Oct. 7, with the 47th annual Homecoming Parade. IU football coach Terry Hoeppner will serve as grand marshal. The parade will form on Rose Avenue next to Willkie Quad, between Third and Seventh streets, and begin at 5:30 p.m. Turning right onto East Third Street, it will advance to Indiana Avenue and end at the Sample Gates.

A pep rally will follow at 6:30 p.m. in front of the Sample Gates at the corner of Indiana and Kirkwood avenues. Hoeppner will be joined by IU football players, the cheerleaders, the RedSteppers, the pom squad and the Marching Hundred to prepare fans for the game on Saturday, Oct. 8, against the University of Illinois.

During pre-game and halftime ceremonies on Oct. 8, the 2005 Homecoming king and queen will be introduced, and trophies will be presented to the teams that place first and second in the Homecoming student competitions. The Marching Hundred alumni band and alumnae RedSteppers will perform, and 50-year I-Men will be honored.

Tickets for the game can be purchased through the IU Athletics Ticket Office. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 812-855-4006 or 866-IUSPORTS. Kickoff will be at 11 a.m.

Alumni and friends also are invited to the 18th annual Homecoming Brunch on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the Gladstein Fieldhouse, east of Assembly Hall. A brief program will begin around 9:15 a.m. and will include entertainment provided by the Chris Ozer Trio, the IU Singing Hoosiers, the IU cheerleaders, the pom squad, and the alumni band. Speakers will include IU Alumni Association President and CEO Ken Beckley, IU President Adam Herbert, IU Athletics Director Rick Greenspan, IU Foundation President Curt Simic and IU Alumni Association Chairwoman Alma Powell. The Heisman Trophy, awarded each year to the most outstanding college football player, will be on display.

Tickets for the brunch, $12 for adults and $6 for children age 12 and under, are available by calling the IU Alumni Association at 800-824-3044. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door. People also can register online at https://alumni.indiana.edu/bloomington/homecoming/index.html through Wednesday, Oct. 5.

Also on Saturday, beginning at 8:30 a.m., the Student Alumni Association will host a Big Red Warm-Up for IU alumni and football fans at the Virgil T. DeVault Alumni Center, 1000 E. 17th St., across the street from Assembly Hall. The Mitchell Street Band will perform live music, and refreshments will be available for $5, or free for SAA members and children 12 and younger. The DeVault Alumni Center will also be open for visits from alumni and friends of IU on Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The annual Homecoming show features BLAST!, a combination of music and theater that began in Bloomington. Performances will be Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at the IU Auditorium, 1211 E. 7th St. Tickets are available by calling the IU Auditorium at 812-855-1103.

Student groups will get into the Homecoming spirit at the "Yell Like Hell" spirit competition on Oct. 6, starting at 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall at the Indiana Memorial Union.

"Yell Like Hell," sponsored by the Student Alumni Association, offers students a jump-start on showing their spirit for Homecoming weekend. Participating groups prepare three-minute acts such as skits, dance routines, musical numbers and lip-syncing. The act with the most Homecoming spirit will be declared the winner. Two special acts will be joining student groups to add to the excitement -- the popular a cappella performers Straight No Chaser and Ladies First. Admission is free, and the general public is invited to watch. For more information on "Yell Like Hell," contact the Student Alumni Association at 812-855-SAA1.
