IU, Ivy Tech officials to sign Hoosier Link agreement today

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Nov. 18, 2005

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Officials at Indiana University Bloomington and Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington today (Nov. 18) will sign a collaborative agreement that guarantees Ivy Tech students admitted into the new "Hoosier Link Program" transferability of credits to IU Bloomington. The signing ceremony is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Ivy Tech Community College in Bloomington.

The Hoosier Link Program will provide the framework for students chosen by the IU Bloomington Office of Admissions from its freshman applicant pool. Those students will be identified as having both an interest in eventually enrolling as degree-seeking students at IUB, and the potential to do so successfully.

"Indiana University is proud to partner with Ivy Tech Community College-Bloomington in creating the new Hoosier Link Program," said IU President Adam W. Herbert. "This innovative program will allow more Indiana students to realize their dream of receiving a college education on the IU Bloomington campus."

Beginning in 2006, 100-200 students will enter the program each fall. Hoosier Link students will enroll in a minimum of 10 credits at Ivy Tech each semester as degree-seeking students and one three-credit course at IUB as non-degree-seeking students. While they will be encouraged to complete the associate degree at Ivy Tech, students in the program will be granted guaranteed transfer status to IUB at the completion of 26 transferable credits with a minimum grade point average of 2.5.

"The collaboration between Ivy Tech-Bloomington and Indiana University in the Hoosier Link program is an excellent demonstration of how Indiana's new two-year community college and its premier four-year university can work together to best meet the needs of Indiana students," said John Whikehart, chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana-Bloomington. "While we each have our own unique mission, there continue to be partnership opportunities for both institutions to make higher education more attainable for Hoosiers."

The framework of Hoosier Link includes a number of features designed specifically to support a successful academic path to an Ivy Tech associate degree and then on to a bachelor's degree at IU.

For example, students will be required to live in a campus residence center, or those from the Bloomington community may live at home. Students also will participate in special ongoing advising experiences with both Ivy Tech and IUB staff to ensure that course work done while enrolled at Ivy Tech will be transferable for their targeted major at IUB.

Hoosier Link students will sign a contract obliging them to participate in various academic, personal and social developmental experiences throughout their first academic year. Programs will include special orientation programs, academic skill enhancement workshops, pre-advising workshops, community service activities and mentoring programs.

Throughout their academic careers, students will have full access to IUB technology accounts, Campus Access Cards, parking services, use of recreational sports centers and the opportunity to participate in various student activities.
