Columbia Scholastic Press Association honors IU's student newspaper, yearbook

Indiana University's student newspaper, The Indiana Daily Student, and its annual yearbook, The Arbutus, each have earned the Gold Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association for overall journalistic excellence. IU was the only school to receive a Gold Crown in both the newspaper and yearbook categories.

The awards were presented March 16 at the College Media Convention in New York City. Publications were judged on writing and editing, design, content, concept, photography, art and graphics.

The Arbutus has won the Gold Crown every year since 1996. Michelle Laird was editor of the 2001 yearbook. The Indiana Daily Student has won the award five of the past six years. Jeff Shireman was editor of the newspaper in the fall of 2000. Brooke Ruivivar was the editor in the spring of 2001.

"We are very proud that both The Indiana Daily Student and The Arbutus won Gold Crown awards," said interim publisher Nancy Comiskey. "It's a tribute to all the talent, energy and hard work that students put into these publications."

The Indiana Daily Student this year celebrated its 135th year of operation. It can be read online at https://www.idsnews.com.
