Professor tossing 'active cookies' at security threats
So you knew about "phishing," the scam e-mails you get cleverly disguised as correspondence from your bank. But have you heard about "pharming?" It's a new form of e-spoofing where end users are scammed by having an e-mail intercepted and directed to a bogus Web site. Markus Jacobsson, associate professor of informatics at IU, has designed a new security technique -- active cookies -- through a startup called RavenWhite. "While cookies were merely designed to identify users, active cookies are designed to authenticate users, explains the company Web site."
