Robel to serve as School of Law acting dean

Lauren K. Robel, associate dean for academic affairs in the School of Law at Indiana University's Bloomington campus, will become the acting dean of the school, effective July 1. IUB Chancellor Sharon Stephens Brehm made the appointment to fill the vacancy created after current dean Alfred C. Aman announced that he would step down June 30 to accept a fellowship at Princeton University.

Robel, who served once before as acting dean of the school in 1998, is also the Val Nolan Professor of Law. She received her law degree from IU in 1983 and then served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jesse Eschbach, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Robel joined the IU faculty in 1985.

"Lauren's broad experience both in the school and across the campus will serve her well in this post," Brehm said. "She is highly regarded for the extensive role she has played in faculty and student affairs as well as policy issues of the school. I am certain she will be a very capable leader of the school."

Robel's teaching interests include civil procedure, constitutional litigation and federal jurisdiction. She has won a number of teaching awards and other citations, most recently being chosen for the 2000 Indiana State Bar Women and the Law Recognition Award.

"I am honored to be asked to continue to be of service to the school, and I look forward to the challenges of the year ahead," said Robel.

She has served nationally as a former chair of the civil procedure section of the American Association of Law Schools and as a former member of the circuit rules committee of the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Robel also has provided ongoing pro bono representation in criminal, habeas and civil rights cases in the Seventh Circuit. She is admitted to the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court and the states of Indiana and Illinois.

Locally, she chaired the Bloomington Human Rights Commission from 1986 to 1991 and was president of Habitat for Humanity of Monroe County in 2000 and 2001.
