BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University will celebrate its 2006 winter commencement Saturday (Dec. 16). IU President Adam W. Herbert will preside over the ceremonies which begin at 10 a.m. in Assembly Hall, and he also will present the commencement address.

A total of 1,886 students are eligible for winter graduation. This figure includes undergraduates and also graduate students whose degrees were awarded during September and October, as well as those who are candidates for November and December degrees.

The traditional commencement ceremony includes a formal presentation of the graduating class, which will be performed by Michael A. McRobbie, interim provost and vice president for academic affairs, IU Bloomington. Herbert will follow by presenting the class with its charge. Conferral of degrees will be led by Herbert, assisted by McRobbie and the deans of the individual schools.

The Rev. Linda C. Johnson, Episcopal chaplain to Indiana University and associate rector of the Trinity Episcopal Church, will deliver the invocation. Patrick A. Shoulders, vice president of the IU Board of Trustees, will represent the university in the induction of its newest graduates. Stan Fox, chair of the Indiana Alumni Association Executive Council, will represent the alumni, and Kristen King, a representative of the IU Student Alumni Association, will represent the class.

Eugene O'Brien, executive associate dean for instruction in the IU School of Music, will lead musical accompaniment to the processional and recessional, and will lead the graduates in singing the alma mater and the national anthem. John D. Franklin, a doctoral candidate in the Jacobs School of Music, will conduct the IU Commencement Ensemble.

Herbert, who is delivering his fourth winter commencement address at IU, began his official duties as the 17th president of Indiana University on Aug. 1, 2003. He also is professor of public administration in IU's School of Public and Environmental Affairs and professor of political science in the College of Arts and Sciences.
