Committee pleased with candidates for next IU president; Trustee: First round of interviews have been a success
Indiana Daily Student, Jan. 19 -- After being impressed by presidential candidates during the first round of interviews, the Presidential Search Committee is confident they will find the University's next leader in a reasonable timetable. Still, the committee continues to reach out to certain individuals who they have not yet considered for the position but who might serve as strong candidates as the inquiry continues, said IU trustee Sue Talbot. SA might sue IU grad student
Indiana Daily Student, Jan. 19 -- The Transportation Security Administration is conducting a civil investigation into an IU Ph.D. student that could lead to substantial monetary penalties, according to a letter from the TSA posted on the student's blog. Full story.

Professors receive $500,000 grant to make kids' video game; Virtual environment teaches children about ethics, decision-making
Indiana Daily Student, Jan. 19 -- Video games aren't usually touted as educational tools. But that doesn't mean they can't be. The IU School of Education received a $500,000 grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation for research on how video games can help students become good citizens. The game, "Academic Play Spaces: Learning for the 21st Century," will build on "Quest Atlantis," a game created by Sasha Barab, an associate professor of learning sciences in the School of Education. Sampson wants meeting with AD to talk student seating; IU one of few schools that lacks student section
Indiana Daily Student, Jan. 19 -- Rifts between students and alumni have the campus talking about "old people" and whether they are seated or standing. Tensions have run high at Assembly Hall. The house that fiery former men's basketball coach Bob Knight built features scattered student seating, maybe the only of its kind at major programs without large dedicated student cheering blocs. LSSSE study says field experience is keys
Indiana Daily Student, Jan. 19 -- Frequent interaction between law students and their professors results in a better education, according to the 2006 Law School Survey of Student Engagement released this month. "It is tremendously important for students to engage with professionals while still in school. Structured pro bono work and clinical experience are ways to do that," said Lauren Robel, dean of IU-Bloomington School of Law. Full story.

IUSAS part of campaign to eliminate textbook tax; Bill is going through Indiana General Assembly
Indiana Daily Student, Jan. 19 -- Students might save on textbooks in a new way, if House Bill 16 passes through the Indiana General Assembly. The IU Student Association is part of a campaign to eliminate taxation on textbooks. According to an online version of the bill, textbooks required for an undergraduate course at an accredited college or university will be exempt from state sales taxes. Full story.

IU Credit Union CEO resigns
Indiana Daily Student, Jan. 19 -- J. Robert Newcomb announced Thursday that he is resigning from his post as president and CEO of IU Credit Union to pursue other career opportunities, according to a news release from the credit union. Full story.

Cameron front-runner for Dolphins job
South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Jan. 19 -- San Diego offensive coordinator Cam Cameron is the apparent front-runner for the Dolphins' head coaching vacancy. Although San Diego has developed one of the NFL's most prolific offenses under Cameron's tutelage, his lone head coaching experience wasn't as successful when posting an 18-37 record at Indiana University from 1997 to 2001. "He was always a pro-type coach," said Chicago and former Dolphins defensive end Adewale Ogunleye, who played under Cameron with the Hoosiers. "College was a little bit under his level. He treated us like men. ... When it comes to offense, he's every serious." Full story.

SportingNews.com, Jan. 18 -- In this blog, Tom Dienhart writes, "How bad has the football been in Bloomington? Pinch your nose and check this out: The Hoosiers haven't been to a bowl since the 1993 season." Full story.

Suffolk names new law school dean
Boston Globe, Jan. 19 -- A former Indiana University law school dean will replace Robert Smith as dean of Suffolk University Law School on July 1, the school announced yesterday. Alfred Aman Jr. is now director of the Institute for Advanced Study and a law professor at Indiana University. Full story.

Cigarette starts fire
Indiana Daily Student, Jan. 19 -- A cigarette butt caused a small fire outside of Collins Edmonson Thursday. The fire occurred outside the building by the ventilation grate, said Bob Weith, director of residential operations. Full story.

Baker's new work echoes experiences
Indianapolis Star, Jan. 19 -- Hoosier composer David Baker drew on two related experiences -- memories of growing up in Indianapolis and observations of young local drummers -- for the piece that his hometown orchestra will unveil tonight. "Dancing Shadows," which the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will premiere at Hilbert Circle Theatre, features saxophonist Otis Murphy, Baker's colleague at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. College freshmen are discussing politics more than they have in 40 years, and fewer describe their views as middle-of-the-road, according to an annual survey released today. A record proportion -- 23.9 percent -- call themselves conservative, and not since 1975 has the proportion of liberals, now 28.4 percent, been higher. Full story.

College governing boards should step up standards for fiscal integrity and trustee performance in order to prevent unwanted government intrusion, according to a report released on Thursday by the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges. Full story.

U.S. Rep. Ruben E. Hinojosa, one of the chief congressional champions of higher-education programs for Hispanic Americans, will head the House of Representatives' subcommittee on higher-education policy in the 110th Congress. Full story.
