IU East interim chancellor named today

RICHMOND, Ind. -- Indiana University President Adam W. Herbert today announced the appointment of an interim successor for Indiana University East Chancellor David Fulton, who is retiring June 30. Herbert said that pending approval by the IU Board of Trustees during its June 22 meeting, Nasser H. Paydar, vice chancellor and dean of Indiana University Purdue University Columbus (IUPUC), will take over management of IU East as interim chancellor.
Jay Howard, professor of sociology and head of the IUPUC Division of Liberal Arts, will become interim vice chancellor of IUPUC.
"Indiana University deeply appreciates Chancellor David Fulton's dedicated leadership of IU East," Herbert said. "Dave has guided IU East's evolution from a regional center to a community college to a comprehensive four-year higher educational institution and to a campus that now provides graduate education. Our challenge now is to build on those many successes. Nasser Paydar has a history of meeting the higher education needs of a community similar in size to Richmond. We are very pleased that he is willing to assume this important leadership role in Richmond. I am very confident that he will do an outstanding job at IU East."
Fulton first came to the Richmond campus in 1971 as an instructor in history and political science. He took over as interim chancellor in August 1994 and was named chancellor the following April. He has overseen a period of tremendous growth at the Richmond campus as it evolved from a two-year institution with limited course offerings to a full regional campus with an inventory of 16 four-year degree programs and a new master's program as well.
Paydar was appointed vice chancellor and dean of Indiana University Purdue University Columbus in 2003 by Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis Chancellor Charles R. Bantz.
Paydar joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IUPUI in 1985 as an assistant professor of mechanical engineering. From 1989 to 2003, he served as chairman of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI, associate dean for graduate programs, associate dean for academic programs, and executive associate dean.
Bantz praised Paydar's accomplishments at the Columbus center, noting his initiation of a $4 million fundraising campaign, IUPUC's first comprehensive campaign and the largest fundraising effort in the center's history; his negotiation of articulation agreements with six IUPUI schools to establish joint baccalaureate programs; IUPUC's continued growth in credit hours for seven consecutive semesters; and his work with educators, businesses and community leaders to identify areas of study that most significantly impact south central Indiana and to prepare students for success in the region.
"As vice chancellor of the Columbus Learning Center, Nasser Paydar demonstrated that he has the experience, talent, vision and leadership skills this new appointment will require," Bantz said.
Howard, a native of Mishawaka, Ind., earned a B.A. from Indiana University South Bend and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Notre Dame. His research interests, which deal with religion and popular culture, have led to a popular book entitled "Apostles of Rock: The Splintered World of Contemporary Christian Music" (co-authored with John M. Streck). An inspired teacher, Jay has won several teaching awards, including the IU President's Award for Teaching Excellence (2001). He is president of the North Central Sociological Association and president of the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation Board of Trustees.
