IU Bloomington Continuing Studies awarded Osher scholarship program for adults

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 21, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington Continuing Studies announced that it has been awarded a grant by the Bernard Osher Foundation to develop an Osher Re-entry Scholars Program at IU.

The funding will support scholarship assistance for adults 25 and older who are pursuing a bachelor's degree at IU. Bloomington Continuing Studies will be eligible for $50,000 in scholarship funding for the next three academic years, with the possibility of a $1 million endowment at the end of this period.

The first group of scholarships -- available to both full- and part-time adult students -- will be awarded for the spring 2009 semester. Eligibility guidelines and application forms will be available online and in the Bloomington Continuing Studies office in Owen Hall 202 during the fall semester. The initiative's primary focus will be on students beginning the General Studies degree, but adults pursuing all undergraduate degrees at IU Bloomington will be invited to apply.

"This generous funding will make it possible for more adults to realize their dream of earning a college degree," said Ron White, executive director of Bloomington Continuing Studies. "The timing could not be better, given the state of the economy and the critical need for retraining opportunities for the local workforce. We wish to thank Bloomington Mayor Mark Kruzan and IU Bloomington Provost Karen Hanson for their strong support of this initiative."
