IU to host national conference on HIV/STD prevention in rural communities

Successful strategies for HIV/STD prevention in rural communities will be the theme for a national conference Friday through Sunday (March 28-30) at the Indiana Memorial Union on the Indiana University Bloomington campus.

Approximately 200 people from throughout the country are expected for the event sponsored by the IU Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention and the National Rural Health Association.

Conference co-director William Yarber, senior director of the Rural Center and an IU professor of applied health science, said those attending will include health educators, AIDS prevention specialists and government representatives. Sessions are planned from noon to 9 p.m. on Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sunday.

The keynote address at lunch on Saturday will cover a 13-state evaluation of HIV prevention in rural America by speakers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Among the more than 50 conference topics are new HIV/STD prevention strategies, assessing and strengthening testing and counseling in rural areas; concerns of the rural African American, American Indian, Latino and migrant communities; risky behaviors; national trends among rural high school students; condom use errors among rural men; and HIV prevention for long-haul truckers.

Speakers will represent HIV/STD prevention programs in several states including Indiana, South Dakota, Illinois, Ohio, California, Mississippi, Texas, Maine, Alaska and New York.
