FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 31, 2008

INDIANAPOLIS -- Blackhawk and Bell Jet Ranger helicopters, bomb-dismantling robots, police SWAT vehicles, ambulances and fire trucks will be among the attractions when Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis observes its second annual Public Safety Career Day on Monday, Aug. 11.

The event, from noon to 3 p.m. in the IUPUI Joseph T. Taylor Hall Courtyard, is designed to give students and the community a chance to meet with representatives of public safety agencies from around the state and to get a close-up look at equipment used in the public safety field.

Members of the public, including families and children, are invited to the event, sponsored by the Public Safety Management program in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI.

"This event is unique as individuals have the opportunity not only to speak to public safety officials, but to see and interact with an enormous variety of equipment types," said Jim White, clinical lecturer in the SPEA Criminal Justice and Public Safety Management program at IUPUI.

Additional equipment that will be featured includes a chemical detection van, a bomb disposal vehicle, police patrol cars, tactical response vehicles and mobile command posts. Participating agencies include the Indiana National Guard, Indiana State Police, Indiana Conservation Officers, the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and numerous law enforcement agencies and fire departments from Indianapolis and Marion County.

The School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI began offering a Public Safety Management major within its Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in 2005. There are now 400 students in the degree program, which focuses on how agencies respond to natural disasters and terrorism, providing a curriculum that meets the needs of a post-9/11 world.

SPEA at IUPUI offers programs in public affairs, criminal justice, health care administration and environmental health science and is ranked among the nation's top 45 schools in public affairs and administration by U.S. News and World Report. Its graduate programs in criminal justice and nonprofit management are ranked among the best in the country.
