BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Overall fall enrollment figures were released today (Sept. 18) for Indiana University's eight campuses, showing strong, record-setting trends university wide in increased student enrollment, increased credit hours taken and increased diversity and foreign enrollment.

The overall numbers at the eight campuses indicate that enrollment is up by 2,605 to a record 101,727 students, the first time this mark has broken 100,000. The previous record was set in the fall of 2003-04 at 99,164 students. Credit hours taken also have increased university wide by 38,075.3 to total 1,183,076.5.

Increases at the undergraduate, graduate and professional levels all contributed to these university-wide record totals of students. Additionally, minority enrollments made significant gains university wide with African American enrollment up by 173 students or 2.6 percent, American Indian enrollment up by 11 students or 3.4 percent, Asian American enrollment up by 273 students or 9.5 percent, and Hispanic enrollment up 207 students or 7.2 percent. Foreign enrollments increased university wide as well by 495 students or 9.4 percent.

On the Bloomington campus, a record 40,354 students are enrolled, up 1,364 students or 3.5 percent from last year's 38,990. The numbers also show a record total of students at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis of 30,300, up 446 students or 1.5 percent from the previous year's 29,854.

The trend toward higher course loads continued again this fall with record numbers for credit hours taken at IU Bloomington (544,236.5); IUPUI (331,226.5); IU East (24,457.5); IU South Bend (73,598); IU Southeast (64,066); and university wide (1,183,076.5). At IUPUI, this was the 13th straight year that the credit-hours-taken total set a record, and the university-wide number was a record for the fourth year in a row, moving from the 2007 total of 1,145,001.3 to this year's figure.

The largest individual campus percentages of enrollment and credit hours taken came at IU East. Enrollment there increased to 2,447 students. While not an enrollment record, the jump of 181 students represents an 8 percent change from the previous year's 2,266. The IU East total credit hours record figure noted in the previous paragraph is an increase of 8.6 percent.

Every campus noted increased enrollment in at least one ethnicity category. Notably, on the IU Bloomington campus all ethnic-category enrollment totals went up, 5 percent for African American students (from 1,665 to 1,749), 3.6 percent for American Indian students (from 112 to 116), 11.6 percent for Asian American students (from 1,409 to 1,572) and 8.8 percent for Hispanic students (962 to 1,047). Foreign student enrollment grew by 7.8 percent (3,749 to 4,040). All are enrollment records for these categories.

Enrollment and credit hours taken by campus:

Bloomington: 40,354 enrollment this year, up from last year's 38,990, an increase of 1,364 students or 3.5 percent. IUPUI: 30,300 enrollment, up from last year's 29,854, an increase of 446 students or 1.5 percent. For credit hours taken, the total is up to 331,226.5 from last year's 322.450.3, a 2.7 percent increase. This is the 13th consecutive year that credit-hours-taken numbers have increased. These totals are IUPUI records for enrollment and credit hours taken. Other record enrollment totals at IUPUI include a 9.1 percent increase in Asian American students (from 1,059 to 1,155) and a 1 percent increase in Hispanic enrollment (from 724 to 731). IU East: 2,447 enrollment this year, up from last year's 2,266, an increase of 181 students or 8 percent. For credit hours taken, the total is up to a record 24,457.5, an increase from last year's 22,523, or 8.6 percent. Additionally, new programs in education and social work at IU East have resulted in an enrollment of 25 graduate students, and African American enrollment is up by 32 percent (from 75 to 99). IU Kokomo: 2,690 enrollment this year, down from last year's 2,835, a decrease of 145 students, or 5.1 percent. For credit hours taken, the total is down to 25,790 from last year's 27,599, a 6.6 percent decrease. Graduate enrollment increased by 5.8 percent (from 86 to 91). IU Northwest: 4,794 enrollment this year, up from last year's 4,790, an increase of 4 students, or 0.1 percent. For credit hours taken, the total is up to 48,736, an increase of 1,522, or 3.2 percent. American Indian enrollment is up by 40 percent (from 20 to a record 28), and Hispanic enrollment is up 8.5 percent (from 555 to a record 602).

IU South Bend: 7,712 enrollment this year, up from last year's 7,517, an increase of 195 students, or 2.6 percent. For credit hours taken, the total is up to a record 73,598, an increase of 2,564, or 3.6 percent. Hispanic enrollment grew by 14.9 percent (276 to a record 317) and American Indian enrollment increased by 9.1 percent (from 33 to 36).

IU Southeast: 6,482 enrollment this year, up from last year's 6,241, an increase of 241 students, or 3.9 percent. For credit hours taken, the total is up to a record 64,066, an increase of 2,636, or 4.3 percent. African American enrollment increased by 25.9 percent (from 313 to a record 394), American Indian enrollment increased by 7.7 percent (from 26 to a record 28); and Asian American enrollment increased by 28.8 percent (from 66 to a record 85). Non-resident enrollment grew on this campus by 7.3 percent (from 1,742 to a record 1,868) mostly due to a 6.3 percent increase in reciprocity students (from 1,689 to a record 1,796).
