IU’s Indiana Memorial Union sets out to break Guinness record with can drive

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oct. 28, 2008

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- On Nov. 12, Indiana University's Indiana Memorial Union will join with college campuses across the country to try and collectively top the Guinness World Record for the most non-perishable food collected in a 24-hour period.

The "food-raising" event, Cans Across America, in the past has collected nearly 400,000 pounds of food for the hungry nationwide. IU's can drive is organized by Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) Dining Services in conjunction with the Sodexo Foundation and the STOP Hunger initiative. Cans Across America was introduced at colleges across the United States in 2006.

Steve Richards, retail operations director at the IMU, said that last year, IMU Dining Services collected more than 3,600 pounds of food, all of which was donated locally to the Hoosier Hills Food Bank.

"We intend to increase that amount to 5,000 pounds this year," said Richards. "Today's college students are deeply concerned about social issues. Cans Across America is a great way for them to get involved and make a positive impact at home and all across the country."

The event is open to IU students, faculty, staff and the general public. Discounted cans of food will be available for purchase and dropoff at food operations in the IMU (Sugar and Spice, Kiva, The Market, Burger King, Starbucks, the Tudor Room) and at the Food Court in the basement of the Wells Library starting Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 5 p.m. through Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 5 p.m.

IU's Cans Across America event will officially begin at 7 a.m. Wed., Nov. 12, and will run until 5 p.m. that day with the final tabulation in the IMU Market.
