BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Noted Indiana University political scientist Elinor Ostrom will deliver the inaugural Karl F. Ostrom is the Arthur F. Bentley professor of political science and professor of public and environmental affairs. She also co-founded the Workshop on Political Theory and Policy Analysis at IU Bloomington.

Ostrom will discuss the challenges faced by scholars who are interested in sustaining ecological systems with research that takes both the complexity of ecological systems and the complexity of social systems into account. Ostrom, who has been inducted into both the National Academy of Sciences and American Academy of Political and Social Science, will report on some of the research conducted by scholars at IU in collaboration with a network of scholars worldwide. She also will examine a framework proposed to help integrate future work that involves ecology and social sciences.

Karl F. Schuessler was a distinguished professor at IU, former chair of the Department of Sociology, and one of the leading social science methodologists of his time. He is the namesake of IU's Schuessler Institute for Social Research. The Schuessler Lecture in Social Science Research seeks to build upon his tradition of excellence and the advancement of social science methodologies.

Thanks to a generous gift from the Schuessler family, organizers plan to invite leading social scientists from IU and across the country to speak each year in this lecture series honoring Schuessler.
